HOW TO BUILD A DANCE POD
First, you need motive.
Let's start in the middle of this story. This video was shot during the building process of my "dance pod", also known as a mobile performance dwelling. It is a travel trailer, designed and built by myself (with lots of help).
In it are two rooms. These two rooms took five years of weekends to complete and fund. These two rooms have changed my life.
The front room is the living space and/or the green room. It has a dry flush toilet, a shower, a built in bench/bed, a desk, and a full kitchen. It has wrap around windows, allowing for 270 degrees of viewing pleasure.
The back room is a mini black box filming/performing studio. The black box has a cantilevered roof, allowing for half of the walls to unfold, thus transforming the room into a twelve by twenty-four foot stage. The stage floor was designed for dance-- the wall's hinges are seamlessly hidden from dancing feet and the structural posts are removable.
So, the motive is to fashion a sustainable dance career. In my experience, dance rarely generates income. In fact, this project began when a colleague and I realized that grad school was the first and only time we actually made a living (if you call $1200/mo enough, I was ecstatic!). Then we realized that, after graduating, we'd return to a lifestyle of odd jobs and occupations. This would cover rent while we pursued our art/dance career. Sometimes, those jobs would also cover the costs of a dance production.
So we decided to change our paradigm, thus my dance pod was born. It took five years of weekends, the turtle's route! Finally, in 2016 it debuted at the Bellweather Bellevue Art Museum festival.
I've included lots of photos to document it's making, from design and throughout the build. The captions tell a little more of the tale...... I hope you enjoy!
This video will be edited into a more concise version. I think the raw version is kinda funny and heartfelt....and reflects the motto I have discovered during this invention process: "done is better than perfect"!
